Odalisque Plastique

“Odalisque Plastique” 2014
By Jane Talton
oil on canvas
41” x 48” framed
Inspired by Manet’s “Olympia”, which was inspired by Titian’s “Venus of Urbino”.
The history of this theme being taken and updated by generations of painters made me want to create my own version using a modern day icon of femininity, Barbie. Because a courtesan ultimately acts as an enabler of her patron’s desires, so Barbie becomes the object which allows the girl to find physical form. Yet Barbie, like Olympia, is no blank screen, for she comes with her own history which causes the would be possessor to be acted upon in turn.
